The Importance of Popcorn

To me, popcorn is an integral part of the movie experience. I can’t stand watching a movie without some of that delicious movie theater popcorn in my lap. The first movie I ever saw by myself was Star Wars (the original) and I remember clutching my couple of dollars to buy a pop and popcorn at the concession stand.
I spent several years managing movie theaters for a small chain and really spoiled myself with popcorn during that time. Yes, I packed on some weight too. I could have popcorn anytime I wanted. I had a popcorn machine a few feet away and the delicious aroma kept wafting throughout my office and the entire building. I’d go home at night and my clothes smelled like popcorn. It was intoxicating.
Too much of a good thing? I hardly think so. In contrast it was even more luring! Weird, I know.
Even though it was a smaller chain, we had good popcorn machines, and I learned a lot about how popcorn machines work, how popcorn is made and how to troubleshoot the popcorn machine if it breaks down. When I first started we still used solid coconut oil that had to be properly heated with a hot rod being pushed through into it and left for an hour. We eventually moved to the more heart-conscious liquid canola oil.
Besides having a popcorn machine at my beck-and-call, I had a free pass (as a manager) to see movies at all the other theaters locally. Wow. Talk about a kid in a candy store! I loved movies and every Wednesday (my day off) I’d go see at least one film. Now, everyone knows that a theater makes its money at the concession, and especially from popcorn, so I’d be sure to not only indulge myself, but support my industry by purchasing a large popcorn every week. I became addicted.
One day, when I have a home theater, I’ll buy my own small commercial popcorn machine and use it for entertaining. Or maybe I’ll just fire it any old time I feel the need for some fresh popcorn and a good movie!
