Opening This Week, Dec 9

Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
If the movie lives up to the beauty of the posters this movie will be a stunning masterpiece. The art and attention to detail in all versions of the poster really bring it to life. Chronicles of Narnia should be the winner among new movies this weekend with the broadest appeal. Kids will love it for it’s Harry Potter appeal, and younger adults will love it because we remember reading it as kids.

Memoirs of a Geisha
I’ve written about the simple beauty of this poster before. It’s an extremely simple and beautiful picture of Ziyi Zhang who should really bring an elegant grace to the film. Rob Marshall directed Chicago before this which bodes well for this piece.

Brokeback Mountain
I love this poster, and recently it was pointed out the similarity to the Titanic poster which is uncanny. It is intentional. Poster designers spent a lot of time studying the most romantic posters of all time, including Titanic obviously. The placement of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal’s heads are mirror images of the Titanic poster, and the shape of Heath Ledger’s shoulder and coloration of his jacket match the ship.

Again, I think all 3 of these movies will be HUGE hits in their own way, but Chronicles of Narnia will likely be the box-office winner.

X3 Movie Teaser

X-Men 3
Apple.Com has the exclusive teaser trailer for the much anticipated X3. Click Here to see it.

Everyone we already know is back. Professor Xavier, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Jean Grey, Pyro, Iceman, Mystique, Magneto and Cyclops. This time out they’re joined by Beast (Kelsey Grammer), Angel (Ben Foster), Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones), Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page), Callisto, Leech and Multiple Man. The trailer has an amazing look. The special effects have again been upgraded, the look of the characters is tighter and familiar. Kelsey Grammer as Beast is a great match and he’s sure to steal the show.

Early plot details say the story will center around the psychology of mutants, especially those with apparent physical differences. Beast is blue. You can’t hide that mutation like Iceman can his powers. This causes a wide variety of psychological effects apparently.

More news as it comes… Don’t forget to check out the trailer, or click on the poster above to buy it from MovieGoods.com

AEON FLUX
Charlize Theron gets my vote for versatility this year. The range from North Country to Aeon Flux is vast and I hope she’s up to the task. With the lack of competition this weekend here in North America, this movie might do something. It has a built in cult-boy following, but I don’t know if it’ll be enough to make a dent.

Wow. That’s the first word I have to say about this movie. Followed by INCREDIBLE, AMAZING, ASTOUNDING and a whole string of other superlatives usually only seen during Hollywood ad campaigns. Seriously though, this movie was truly one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time.

Perhaps because I’ve seen too many Hollywood popcorn-blockbuster-explosion-fests this year. I’ve forgotten what a REAL FILM can be like. I actually cried for a few minutes near the end of this film. The death of one of the characters had a much stronger effect on me than I’d anticipated. I also found myself laughing with the characters and getting caught up with them as they celebrated, and as they struggled.

The music was amazing. I practically ran home to get the soundtrack. None of the stores had a copy on hand (surprise) so I ordered it from Amazon. If you’d like to order it, click here.
